EVALUATION STRATEGIES AND TEACHERS INFLUENCE ON STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN GOVERNMENT PDF
CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
Every individual grows towards becoming a
functional member of the society; in the process of growth he gains empowerment
through school learning. Stakeholders in education industry such as government,
parents, missionaries, and proprietors of schools had invested huge sum of
money and, materials to ensure high performance of students under their care
(Bola, 2003).
They have always been diversity in the
performance of students in secondary schools in Government. While some students
perform better the other do the opposite and some cases, students are withdrawn
from school for low performance.
Various reasons have been blamed for this
failure. Among them include the different levels of intelligence, some
socio-economic factors, the school environment, evaluation strategies and
methods of teaching.
Evaluation strategy simply
refers to the methods, approaches and pattern used by the teachers to determine
the level of attainment of behavioral objectives. Michael (2004) defines
evaluation strategies as the way or manner a teachers or instructor adopted in
other to examine learning outcome of the students, during, after or before
teaching process; such methods includes, formative evaluation strategies,
assumptive evaluation strategies, diagnostic evaluation strategies, and many
others. Daniel (2014) was on this opinion when he added that evaluation
strategies is an undisputed factor in every teaching and learning process, he
went further to say that for learners to attain greater percentage of the
lesson, teachers must adopt proper evaluation methods to enable the students
perform better in the cause of lesson delivery. Nigeria society today is
developing; therefore, it should stimulate the spirit of patriotism and lay the
solid foundation for national and international understanding and corporation
in students. Due to this fact, the education of the youth is very importance in
other to ensure the citizens to the social and economic development of the
country as well as raising the standard of living generally.

According to smith (2008) the school as
agent of socialization could have significant impact on the child. This is
evident from the fact that it is a place where the child learns about
leadership and what it takes; also learn basic skills and behavior pattern
taught by teachers. It therefore becomes a necessity to the method that the teacher
uses to evaluate the students. He concluded by saying that the teacher should
therefore adopt a proper evaluation strategies that suit the developmental
stage of the learners in the teaching context.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The urgent need to
promote learning and improve performance in Government among secondary school
students in your Local Government Area resulted into a range of related but
different evaluation strategies in classroom levels. The resultant features has
been inconsistent performance of students in examinations nationwide and
performance still varies from school to schools. This undermines the future of
many students that are in schools that persistently perform poorly.
What
therefore remains disturbing is whether there is a significant influence of
evaluation strategies adopted by teachers teaching Government in secondary
schools in your Local Government Area and students’ academic performance in
examinations. It was on this background that the researcher was interested to
carry out the research in other to determining whether the persistence poor
performance of students in Government in your Local Government is as a result of
poor evaluation strategies adopted by the teachers..
