CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION

1.1      Background to the Study
Science is the bedrock on which the modern day technological breakthrough is hinged. The foundation of every science subjects is laid through basic science. Thus, for a child to function very well in science subjects, the knowledge of Basic Science has a very vital role to play.
As a result, the teaching of Basic Science is challenging and interesting endeavour, demanding seriousness and carefulness from the basic science teachers.
Inder (2014) opined that for effective implementation of instructional of any educational curriculum, the use of instructional facilities is as important as the teacher.
According to Cooms, (2012), education consists of two components. He classified these two components into inputs and outputs. According him, inputs consist of human and materials resources while the outputs are the goals and outcomes of the educational process. If one wants to investigate and assess the educational system, the two has effects on the other. Instructional facilities which are the educational inputs are of vital important to the teaching of basic science.
Gbamanja (2010) described instructional facilities as any device that has instructional content/function which is used for the purpose of teaching. these facilities include books, audio-visual materials, maps, charts, improvised local resources such as soil sample, seeds, fruits, flowers etc. Moreover, model of skeletal system, library resources, laboratory apparatus, journals are also instructional resources/facilities.
onyeosu (2014) put is that instructional resources also known as the instructional facilities are those media which help to facilitates teaching/learning process. Proper utilization of these facilities is an important factor during the implementation of educational curriculum which helps the implementers to realize their goals in a short period of time.
Eboh, (2010) opined that the basic goals of the educational curriculum can only be realized through proper utilization of instructional facilities. He also asserted that no matter how well the teacher is, without a proper utilization of educational facilities, the basic goals of the lesson cannot be achieved. Instructional facilities can also be viewed as those apparatus of teaching which may include audio materials, cassette, video tape, computers and other relevant materials that can attract students’ attention and which should only be introduced at the appropriate time by the teacher.
Instructional facilities could be defined as those materials which a teacher puts into use to promote the lesson which also help the teacher to communicate more effectively to the learners. Instructional facilities also help in concretizing abstract concepts and stimulate students’ interest and concentration. Moreover, it also helps to increase active participation in the learning process and save the teacher’s energy and reduce the verbal instructions.
The utilization of instructional facilities makes teaching/learning process effectives as it enables the learners to participate actively in classroom instruction. These points suggest that the utilization of instructional facilities brings about high academic performance.
Burton (2015) opined that the extent of utilization instructional facilities depends on the extent of its availability. This means that before a teacher could make use of instructional facilities, they must be available. When the facilities are utilized in the teaching/learning process there must be effect on the academic performance of the students.
therefore, it is against this background that this study on the influence of availability and use of instructional facilities in teaching basic science on students academic performance in secondary schools in Obot Akara local government area.

 1.2      Statement of the Problem
Basic science is a very important subject among all subjects in our junior secondary schools system. The reason is that the knowledge of basic science helps in laying a solid foundation about science and technology. But the academic performance of students in this important subject has been observed to be poor across the state in recent time.
The cause of this poor academic performance of students have been attributed to so many factors such as student’s attitude, home factors, schools factors, peer pressure, teachers competences, poor teaching methods, Non-utilization of instructional facilities among others.

1.3      Purpose of the Study
The general purpose of the study is to......................................
