NIGERIA SENATORS FIASCO OF 2018 IN AKAN ESSIEN’S DIALOGUE OF ANGELS
ABSTRACT
This paper seeks to analysis senator fiasco of
2018 using Akan Essien’s dialogue of angels to explore and uncover the problems
and corrupt practices by our Nigerian political leaders. Embezzlement of
public’s funds has lead to the squabble among senators in the house, the 2018
senators fiasco is not left out, the upper house (legislature) which supposed to be the law making body
turned to be the body that streamer downhill the constitution. Nevertheless,
Akan Essien’ Dialogue of Angel provide also ways to get ahead of this trauma.
Introduction
Literature
is a social tool that mirrors out the problem of the society. It also reveals
the hidden things of the society to it readers, it help to correct and suggest
ways which the political leaders of our country can lead the nation without
exploiting the poor masses of their fundamental human rights.
Akan
Essien dialogue of Angels is a mirror of Nigeria political struggle and public
embezzlement of funds by our political leaders. 2018 was a year of democratic change in Nigeria senators was
unfold to the general public since Nigeria politics is a politic of violence.
The
moral decay in our political system has cause a lot of setback to the nation’s
economy this has turn many literary writers to focus on the theme of politics
and social injustices.
Nigerian
politician are satirizes as leaders who embezzle public project funds and use lies
and fake stories to cover up their corrupt behavior; this was seen in Nigeria
Senate 2018 when a senator by name Dino Malaye was accused for embezzlement of
public fund but when he was called for arrest by the D.S.S. for interrogation
but he ran and hide in his house for over two weeks and later, was announced to
be sick, he was escorted to the hospital by the police but on the way to the
hospital, he escaped again from the police. Later on February 2019 the same
Dino Malaye that was hunted by the D.S.S. was the one who allowed standing in
for the position of a senator in his senatorial district which he won and
return back to senate all this he achieve due to the immunity of the office.
In
the Akan Essien’ Dialogue of Angels, the writer depicts the nature of live our
senators are putting the citizen through.
“After a dinner of soaked garri
and groundnuts, I decide to sleep at my verandah, my one room apartment being
unbearably hot. This heat period everywhere indoor was hot especially during
the night (23).”
In
the above extract, Essien portray the living standard of people in Nigeria and
the harsh condition that the masses are passing through in our country, he
further shows the inability of Nigerian government to give their citizens some
base amenities such as electricity that is needed by the masses to live a happy
life at the comfort of their own houses.
But
the senators and other political leaders are busy enjoying the money which
should have been used to savage the pressing needs of the citizens thus:
The
angels that I saw ate chicken and their tables were huge bottles of juice
orange drinks and bottle water (24).
The
above quote shows the high living standard or our politicians in Nigeria who
have directly exploited the poor masses that voted for them to go and represent
them. They turned to punished.
In
the text, Essien satirized our senators who plan to impeach anybody that tries
to apposed them or open up their covered secret thus;
But Angel Baboon is it true that
the funds you were given to replace the bulbs at St. Chop and Don Quench Park
have vanished? Asked Angel Vulture. Don’t mind my detractors; it will not be
well with them. Should Angels not hold money? Why should we be heaven conscious
all the time? (27).
From
the above extract, Nigerian senators are satirizes as leaders who embezzle
public project funds and use lies and fake stories to cover up their corrupt
behavior.
Summary
Essien lampoon the
politics in Nigeria as a game in which God is not involved due to the high
level of brutality and corruption by Nigerian politician to gain power and
wheel the economic wealth of the nation. Ethnicity and cultural discrimination
has finally set in to the political governance of Nigeria and thereby keep the
nation in a backward state.
This

made our leaders to engage themselves in so many dubious action which has
