CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Over the years, science education has faced various challenges. The curriculum offers a child-centered teaching and learning approach as a student are encouraged to take up the science-related subjects including biology, which occupies a unique position in the school curriculum and is central to many science-related courses (Yusuf and Afolabi, 2010). In Nigeria, the inclusion of science subjects in the school curriculum is to promote national development as the nation adopts more science-oriented policies and programs in education (Oriachi 2010).
Poor performance of students is mainly due to the lack of motivation for teachers; lack of teaching skills and competence by science teachers; and lack of opportunities for professional development of science teachers (Braima and Okadeyi, 2001; Olaleye, 2002) other factors include syllabus, teachers qualifications, workload, experience and disposition, general lack of teaching skills and ineffective style of delivery of subject matter are also identified as some of the causes (Adepoju, 2009; Salau, 2011).
A large amount of research on the effectiveness of the teaching method indicates that the quality of teaching is often reflected the learner’s achievement. In this Adunola (2011) opines that regular poor academic performance by most of the students is linked to ineffective teaching methods to impart knowledge to the learners by teachers. So that the method used for teaching can be effective, Adunola (2011) also asserted that teachers need to be full of knowledge o9f numerous teaching strategies that take recognition of the magnitude of the complicity of the concept to be observed.
Ideal teaching refers to teaching and learning as it is expected to take place in the classroom in an ideal situation. The teaching and learning process involves some methods and means of enhancing meaningful learning in biology, it is necessary to apply the right method of teaching that will probably help convey the unique system of man and the nature of his environment easily and to the understanding of the students. Thus, there is a very urgent need for the teacher to be conversant with some of the teaching methods and how they can affect the academic performance of students. This teaching method comprises of the principles and methods used by the teachers to enable students learning. These strategies are partly determined on subject matter to be taught and partly by the nature of the learner. For a particular teaching method to be appropriate and efficient, it has to be in relation to the characteristic of the learner and the type of learning it is supposed to bring about.
The teaching and learning process involve a vast array of interventional processes at the center of which is the teacher whose role remains pivoted to the success of any educational program in spite of the technological breakthrough in audiovisual equipment teacher have been remaining indispensable since they constitute the bulk walk in which educational machines are made to have meaning. Therefore this study is sought to investigate the influence of teaching methods and learning of biology among secondary school students in Uyo Local Government Area.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Biology is one of the core science subjects, which is supposed to be the most interesting subject to students in senior secondary schools. It has been discovered that effective teaching biology has been very important. But the rat of which students fail biology in result time’s that effective learning has not been attending by this student Aganga (2000) observe that “many secondary schools, especially the public schools have insufficient competence teachers as well a biological equipment in the different school.
The teachers in biology need to attain a high level of competence. These competencies include content competence, competence in transferring the content to the learners and mostly competence in the use of a variety of teaching methods; this cal, for the selection of the appropriate method for every lesson as demanded. When this competence is attained, perhaps it can foster the academic performance of the student in biology. The teaching method in biology can improve the academic performance of secondary school student in Uyo Local Area.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The general purpose of this study is to find out the impact of teaching method on learning of biology among secondary school in Uyo Local Government Area. Specifically, the study sought to:...........For full Projects Material, Assignments and Term Papers Contact: 09074563328
